Meet Rod Martin, Director of Origin Landscapes and his team in Perth, WA. Rod has a great ability to envisage a creative outdoor space with a customer-centred communication style that develops trust and respect.

As a very young boy, Rod Martin had a keen interest with plants and nature. He had a natural green thumb and love for plants, design and construction, and blending these for creating wonderful and rewarding outdoor spaces.

Land Management and Conserving Natural Resources

Rod is now a professional landscaper with a wealth of experience in horticulture, land management, and engineering surveying. He embarked on his career journey in 1986 with a traineeship at CALM (the Department of Conservation and Land Management), where he gained expertise in horticulture and land management. During this period, he acquired knowledge on how to manage land and conserve natural resources, which has been a great asset in his current profession.

Plant Propagation and Selection

In 1987, Rod was employed at the Karratha local government native nursery, where he honed his skills in propagation and sales to the public. He also played a significant role in maintaining the local Arboretum, ensuring that it remained an attractive and healthy public space. His experience in horticulture and landscaping during this period helped him to develop a strong understanding of plant propagation and selection, which he now applies in his work as a landscaper.

Engineering Surveying

Rod's career journey took a different turn between 1987 and 1990 when he worked in engineering surveying while pursuing his diploma in engineering surveying. This experience gave him a keen eye for measurements, gradients, and levels of the land, which has been instrumental in his current profession. As a professional landscaper, he uses this knowledge to ensure that the land is levelled correctly and that the right measurements are taken for every job.

30 Years Experience

For more than three decades, Rod has been involved in the landscaping industry, gaining a wide range of experience in different areas of the field. Between 1990 and 1994, he worked with various contractors in lawn, garden, and reticulation, which helped him to develop a keen eye for detail and a strong work ethic. During this time, he gained valuable experience working on different types of projects and landscapes, which he now applies in his work as a landscaper.

Turf Management Specialist

In 1994, Rod set up his first business in lawn mowing and branched out into landscaping. He quickly gained a reputation for delivering high-quality work, and his business grew rapidly. In 1996, he obtained a turf management certificate in Perth, which further enhanced his skills and knowledge in the field. This certification allowed him to specialise in turf management, which he has incorporated into many of his landscaping projects over the years.

Building and Construction Industry Experience

After a break from the landscaping industry, Rod set up a new landscaping business in 2001. This business thrived, and he was able to sell it in 2008. During this time, he gained a wealth of experience working with builders in construction and as a designer/consultant. This experience provided him with a unique perspective on the building and construction industry, which he now applies in his work as a landscaper.

Working with a Client's Budget

Rod is an individual who has diverse professional experience across various industries. He completed his diploma in mortgage broking/finance in 2015, and soon after, he worked as a mortgage broker. During this time, Rod gained an in-depth understanding of finance budgeting, which has proven to be invaluable in his subsequent ventures. His experience in the mortgage broking industry enabled him to strike a balance between a client's budget and the value that could be added to properties through landscaping.

Rod expertise and skills adds value to properties

In 2020, Rod decided to re-enter the Perth landscaping industry, where he had prior experience. He established his own business, Origin Landscapes Pty Ltd, where he could apply his skills and knowledge to deliver quality services to clients.
Rod's experience in both the mortgage broking/finance and landscape industries has allowed him to gain a unique perspective on how to add value to properties. His background in finance has also helped him to manage his business efficiently and effectively. Rod is a hardworking individual who strives to deliver exceptional service to his clients, and his passion for the landscape industry is evident in the quality of work he produces.
